Obituary for Alice Lucille Martin

Martin, Alice Lucille, 103, was born December 18, 1916 in Louisville, KY. She died April 5, 2020 at Sycamore Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation. She attended public schools in Louisville, and after graduating from Central Colored High School, she attended Hampton University in Hampton, VA where she received her Bachelor Degree in primary education. She continued her education at Columbia University in New York, NY where she received her Master Degree in higher education. Lucille was a teacher in the Louisville Public School System for 36 years. She taught at Coleridge Taylor and Lincoln Elementary Schools before she retired. She also taught school at U. S. Military Bases in Germany, France and Japan.Lucille was a long time member of Brown Memorial CME Church. She joined the church as a young adult and loved working within the church until her health started to fail. She was president of the senior choir and faithfully sung with them each Sunday. Lucille also held positions as steward, trustee and assistant to the pastor.Her love for God showed as she worked faithfully within the CME conference, both locally and nationally.Lucille worked beside and with Bishop Dr. Charles King as founders of Project One. This was an organization that allowed young people ages 14 to 18 to apply and find summer jobs. Project One also had a tutoring department, because Lucille knew the importance of educating our youth. She demanded respect from them telling them to say “yes madam or no madam” to their elders.The next joy in her life was being a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She enjoyed working for and with the Deltas whether it was local or national.Lucille was involved in organizations that improved Christian living and education. She was a member of the Church Women United, Fort Hill Neighborhood Council, Women and Children Council Louisville Branch and the Hampton University Alumni Association.Lucille was a recipient of the 1988 Bell Award given by the WLKY television station. She was one of several runners to carry the 1996 Olympic Torch when it passed through Kentucky.She was preceded in death by her parents James and Jenny Martin; her brothers James and Everett Martin and a niece Shirley Martin Crumes.She is survived by 2 nieces Nila M. Jackson and Janice A. Martin; 2 nephews Kenneth E. Martin Lamar, TX and Carl A. Martin Freemont CA; 8 great nieces and nephews; 16 great great nieces and nephews and 5 great great great nieces and nephews.Her funeral and burial will be private do to the present circumstances.A memorial remembrance and celebration of Alice Lucile Martin’s life will be held at a later date.Arrangements are entrusted to W. P. Porter Mortuary. Online condolences
