Obituary for Juanita Pauline Burks

Burks, Juanita Pauline, 94, of Louisville, transitioned peacefully August 3rd at home surrounded by family. She was born in Crittenden County, Marion, KY. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Ishmon; her mother Donna and her father Allen Farley; her sister Nora P. McCain and her son, Reverend Robert C. Burks. Juanita attended Kentucky State University and came to live in Louisville in 1944. Her first job was an elevator operator at the Commodore Apartments. In 1974 at the age of 54 years she started her first of several businesses including City Plaza Personnel, Tender Loving Care Nurses Registry, Medi-Health Stop Smoking and Weight Loss, Watterson Bootery, Burks Wholesale Liquor Distributorship and J. P. Burks Construction. Her minority recruiting firm, City Plaza Personnel recruited over 2,000 African Americans for Fortune 500 Companies throughout the United States ranging from secretaries to vice presidents. She worked as a private duty nurse at Jewish Hospital which motivated her to start Tender Loving Care Nurses Registry providing private duty nurses to hospitals and private homes. Another early job in her career was with Kaufman Straus Department Store as a maid and an elevator operator. Forty-two years later, Burks Glass, Inc. installed over three and one-half million dollars worth of glass in the interior of the Louisville Galleria. First and foremost, Juanita was a homemaker to her family. Her flair for decorating and hospitality was shared with many family members and friends. Because of her love for hats, she was honored by Actor's Theatre as the "Hat Queen of Louisville". As a community activist, Juanita received numerous honors and awards for her involvement and accomplishments in professional and civic affairs. She received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Kentucky State University; Chairman of the American Diabetes Walk in 1998; served on the Columbia Suburban Hospital Board of Trustees; the Governor's Scholar's Board of Directors; Spalding University Board of Trustees; member of State of Kentucky Economic Development Council; Falls Regional Health Council Board of Directors; Charter member of the Louisville Heritage Weekends; Pritchard Committee of Higher Education; President Jimmy Carter Energy Board in Washington, DC; received the Louisville Defender Entrepreneur Award; Black Achiever of the Year; Outstanding Kentuckian Entrepreneur; the River City Business and Professional Women's Achievement Award; and featured in Money Magazine and Black Enterprise. She is survived by her son Ishmon Burks (Teri); daughter, Donna Burks Sanders; grandchildren Angela Maria Burks, Wallis Michelle Burks and Chase Alexander Burks Sanders along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Special thanks to caregiver Rhonda Elliott for all of her support. Her funeral service will be held 6:00 p.m. Wednesday August 6, 2014 at First Congregational Methodist Church 3810 Garland Ave., with burial Thursday in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-6p.m. Wednesday at the church. The family request that expressions of sympathy take form of take form of donations to the American Diabetes Association and the Junior Achievement in lieu of flowers. Arrangements are by W. P.
