Obituary for Valerie Brown Moss

Valerie Eve Brown Moss was born on July 17th, 1952 to the union of Charles "June" Brown and Evelyn Perossier Diggs Brown in Louisville, KY. Bothe parents predeceased their daughter: Evelyn in 1986 and June in 2000. She departed this life on Wednesday May 13th and leaves behind many who mourn her passing. Valerie was a 1970 graduate of Loretto High School and attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green in 1971, then graduated from the University of Louisville with a Bachelor of Science degree. She was then employed by the Emergency Medical Services beginning in 1977, which prepared her for a distinguished career in first response care. This was where she met and married her firefighter husband, Karl Dean Moss, married him in 1982, and gave birth to their son, Evan, in 1985. Within the Louisville Fire & Rescue, Valerie rose to the ranks of Captain and was later promoted Major Valerie Brown Moss, becoming the first woman and the first African American Major in the history of the Louisville Fire & Rescue. Valerie leaves to cherish her memory her son, Evan Jared Moss, and grandson, King Jared Moss, two brothers, Charles Wesley Brown (Sandra) of Los Angeles, CA, Jonathon Paul Brown (Lisa), of Fowler, IN, two sisters, Inez Marie Brown-Bridges of Smithfield, Michigan. Angela Diggs Weathers (Tim) of Elizabethtown, KY. In addition to her siblings, Valerie leaves her beloved aunt, LaVerne Perossier Smith Hill of Columbus, Ohio, cousins, Linda Smith Ransom of Columbus, Ohio, and Michael D. Smith (Jaquetta) of Atlanta, Georgia, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Memorial services for Major Valerie Brown Moss will be held on Thursday, May 21st at W.P. Porter Mortuary at 2611 Virginia Avenue, Louisville, KY from 6 to 8 pm.
